KANNAPOLIS — Construction of a new parking garage in downtown Kannapolis was recently completed. The new public space is located at 311 Oak Avenue, near the First Presbyterian Church. It’s a five-minute walk from downtown shops, restaurants and the Atrium Health Ballpark. Oak Avenue has 60 new spaces, including disability assessment options. Parking is free in this area.

The city invites all residents and visitors to take advantage of the new parking option and explore the variety of businesses located in downtown Kannapolis.

Additionally, West Avenue Express, a free shuttle service, operates every Friday and Saturday between 17.00 and 22.00. There are two electric-powered West Avenue Express shuttles. They seat 16 people and are ADA accessible.

The two shuttles, nicknamed Lightning and Thunder, make a continuous loop between four designated stops: the North Carolina Research Campus public parking lot, horseshoe hill and the First Baptist Church rear access area, all at the North Research Campus Road and intersection. West Avenue and Cannon Baller Way near the Swanee Theatre. Look for signs indicating express stops.

“Shuttles offer a safe and convenient way to assist our downtown customers who cannot find parking near our major entertainment venues such as the Gem Theatre, Atrium Health Ballpark and Swanee Theatre,” said Kannapolis City Manager Mike Legg. “This is especially important for those with mobility challenges or parents juggling young children. But anyone can ride the West Avenue Express, and we hope these new services will make visits to our city center more enjoyable for everyone.”
