Later Oregon State Beavers lost their third straight game — this is disproportionate – ram Trent Bray He spoke to reporters about his team’s performance against the California Golden Bears on Saturday in Berkeley, Calif.

Here’s a transcript of what Bray had to say as the Beavers head into their second bye week of the season. Bray’s comments have been lightly edited for brevity and clarity.

Q: Trent, tell me about this game. Frankly, you’re pretty disappointed with how this turned out.

Bray: Yes, we never played well at any stage. He didn’t coach well, he didn’t play well, that’s unacceptable.

Q: The beginning of the game, how it started, kind of set the tone.

Bray: Yes, they went down immediately and scored. The fact that we were lingering deep in our own territory was a kind of sign of what was to come for the rest of the day.

Question: Fourth quarter, 17 play drive. The guys kept playing hard because they want to get better and they want to get back on track.

Bray: No questions. We need to do a better job as coaches, giving them the tools to be successful.

Q: We’ve got six quarters on offense now, but we haven’t been able to do much. Is there any reason why things are getting worse on that side of the ball?

Bray: I couldn’t say anything that came to my mind. There was no running game tonight. So when we don’t have a running game, it’s hard to get going. And in the third quarter against UNLV, it was kind of a case of not being able to run the football behind the sticks. We don’t play that way and we have difficulty when we have to play that way.

Question: Why did you decide to withdraw Gevani (McCoy)?

Bray: The offense just wasn’t progressing. I wanted to see if one of the other guys could light a spark and start something. That’s it.

Q: How was Ben (Gulbranson)?

Bray: I thought some good things happened. Obviously, he made good decisions and good reads on the touchdown drive and we were able to get into the end zone.

Q: What will you do during this bye week until you get back on track?

Bray: There are several stages, approximately one. We’ve got to be healthy, we’ve got to bring some guys back, that should help. We have to look at ourselves and how are we doing, what should we teach and what should we train so that we can make this strong breakthrough in the last four games? And then we have to be better.

Question: Can you evaluate the point guard position going forward?

Bray: I couldn’t do this right now. I got to watch the movie and talk to Gundy (Ryan Gunderson).

Question: What happened today in the defense of the past? Because run defense was the problem and today it wasn’t the problem. What happened in pass defense?

Bray: This is a good question. I think we’ve been out of place too many times and they’re good too. Their point guard is a really good player. They have really good receivers and to defend a team like this you have to be sharp and play your game well. And today we weren’t.

Question: The first goal was kind of an improvisation. As a coach, does this just happen by chance, or are there things you tell your guys to look for with something like this?

Bray: Oh my god. This was a really instinctive and smart play by them, a great effort by their quarterback, they just played smart on the backs of those about to be tackled, they just flipped. This is a great game of theirs.

Question: How do you handle the journey home after such a loss?

Bray: I don’t watch the movie because I’m still emotionally involved in it. I will think and think about where we are, what we are doing, how we can do this better. That’s probably what I do too.

Q: Is that you? Worried about losing some of these guys?

Bray: No, not at all.

Q: You said you are emotional. How would you describe your current feelings?

Bray: You are disappointed. I guess I’m disappointed. We lost two close games we could have had, then we went out and didn’t play well tonight. And it’s very frustrating because we’re better than our record and we need to play to that standard and we’ve got to convince our guys of that. So again, the first job is on me, the coaches and preparing these players to play better.

Q: I’m thinking about the conversation we had in your office in January, your message to the team, and the College Football Playoff campaign. Frankly, that too is over. As we move forward, how are you readjusting things, what are you looking at moving forward?

Bray: Yeah, I think it’s just about us. We’re constantly looking for the best versions of ourselves, and that’s what we’re after. And we couldn’t find it, so that’s what we’re after. We have four games left, we need to make a strong move to give ourselves another game chance. So our focus right now is on the next game that will get us closer to that.
