What to Make of Cam Thomas’ Strong Start to 2024-25 Campaign?

Despite a 0-2 record, it’s hard to imagine how competitive the Brooklyn Nets’ first two losses would have been without the contributions of Cam Thomas.

Granted, it’s a small sample size, but the 23-year-old is currently averaging 30 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3 assists per game and is hitting 55.6% of his three-point attempts. While these numbers probably aren’t sustainable, they do signal that the Nets could see another year of increased production.

Thomas has seen an uptick in his scoring average since his arrival in the NBA; This increase is also highlighted by a 12-point increase in the nightly scoring average between the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. If he improves for another year at the end of this year, Thomas will not only position himself as a Most Improved Player of the Year Candidate, but will also likely earn himself a big contract in the process.

Whether the payday comes from Brooklyn remains to be seen after the Nets opted not to sign Thomas to an extension before the Oct. 21 deadline. Earlier this month, Brian Lewis of the New York Post wrote that Erik Slater “Bleav” A podcast stating that there is “no baseline” for Thomas’ value leaguewide.

A continuation of the electric striker’s hot start could help Brooklyn and their rivals come to a final conclusion on his value. Any negotiations now have to wait until the offseason, which will give Thomas plenty of time to earn every dollar he can.

The Nets will face Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks tomorrow at 18:00 ET at the Barclays Center.
