After years of waiting, Pokémon’s sixth generation gets more representation Pokémon Go With the addition of Dynamax as a special mechanic, however, it is not easy to understand.

Just like Mega Evolution, Dynamaxing is linked to a new type of raiding. Maximum BattleThis does not occur in Gyms and has unique rewards required to keep the mechanic working outside of certain conditions. Here’s everything you need to know about Dynamax Pokémon and how you can harness their power in Pokémon Go.

Just like Pokémon Sword and Shield, Pokémon Go’s approach Dynamaxing allows a Pokémon to exponentially increase its size and strength for a limited time. And the mechanic has only been available in Max Battles since launch.

However, unlike the original version of the mechanic, a Dynamax Pokémon in Pokémon Go can only know three Maximum Moves; An attack based on Pokémon, Max Spirit and Max Guard. You need to unlock these moves by using Max Particles and Candy on the appropriate Pokémon, but more on that in a moment. An explanation for each Maximum Move:

Your Pokémon will only be Dynamaxed in Max Battles and will only remain Dynamaxed for three turns, just like in Sword and Shield; so use your time wisely.

Before Dynamax can be unlocked in Pokémon Go, you must reach Trainer level 13 and access the To The Max Special Research quest, which will help you encounter your first Dynamax Pokémon.

Once this is done you will start to see Power Points appear on the map. These are special locations that are not tied to existing PokéStops or Gyms, but will spawn and allow you to interact with them. If you interact with a Power Point, you can receive some Maximum Shards that can be used to help you increase your Pokémon’s Maximum Moves or reach Maximum Battle.

Like Raids, Maximum Battles are available when the timer on a Power Point reaches a certain threshold; this allows you to challenge that location’s Power Point Boss with your own Dynamax Pokémon. Note that only Dynamax Pokémon can battle in Maximum Battle, but after defeating a Power Point Boss you can attempt to capture the boss.

Max Shards are used to power up your Dynamax Pokémon by increasing their Max Moves and enter Max Battles at their Power Points. The Maximum number of Particles you need to engage in a Maximum Battle with other players depends on the Power Point Boss, but your particles will only be consumed if you successfully complete the battle.

Each player can earn a total of 800 Maximum Shards per day, and you can only hold a maximum of 1,000 Maximum Shards at any given time; the total is displayed in the Nearby Menu under the Power Point section. Here are all the ways to earn Maximum Shards, excluding various Field, Timed or Special Research missions.

Maximum Battles function as slightly more interesting raids, with turn-based mechanics and requirements to match.

Once you reach a Power Point and get enough Maximum Shards to enter a Maximum Battle, you will be able to choose up to three Pokémon to bring with you to face the Power Point Boss. Each Pokémon you choose must have the Dynamaxing ability, and up to four players can personally participate in a Maximum Battle at a time.

During Max Battle, your Pokémon will start without being Dynamaxed and facing the boss. Tap the screen to use your normal moves, swipe when you see a targeting prompt to try and dodge the boss’s attacks, and swipe to move your Pokémon to any floating icon for extra energy to fill the Max Meter on the screen.

Once the Maximum Meter is full, your Pokémon will Dynamax for three turns, giving you access to your current Maximum Moves. Additionally, when you defeat the Power Point Boss, you will receive numerous rewards such as Berries, Rare Candy, and more. These rewards and the Maximum Fragment cost scale depending on the Maximum Combat level, which can be divided into three categories.

Note: Six-star Pokemon are only available in Gigantamax forms

You can pay 100 PokéCoins to double the rewards you receive and choose to leave a Pokémon from your team at the Power Spot until it disappears, which will give a damage increase to other Trainers at that spot and earn you equal rewards. And unlike Gyms, you can recall your Pokémon from a Power Point at any time.

Once you clear these menus, you will have a chance to catch the Power Spot Boss you just defeated using the Dynamaxed Premier Balls you earned as a reward.
