A new series of stamps showcasing “dramatic displays” of the northern lights in the sky over the Isle of Man has been launched.

Local astronomer Howard Parkin said the peak of the current 11-year solar cycle was “wonderfully illustrated” in the “innovative” set.

The images of the Aurora Borealis in the Lights of Mann collection were shot by local photographers; Some of these were shot with mobile phones, others with high-end digital cameras.

Although this natural phenomenon is usually seen in polar regions such as Alaska and Norway, it can sometimes be seen from the northwestern coast of the island.

Colorful images emerge when the solar wind interacts with the Earth’s magnetic field, creating vibrant displays of green, red, purple and blue in the sky.

Mr Parkin said 2024 would see “some of the most impressive aurora displays” seen on the island in more than 20 years.

“With our fantastic dark skies, the Isle of Man is a great place to see the aurora borealis or northern lights,” he said.

The stamp collection, created by the Isle of Man Post Office (IOMPO) in collaboration with the Isle of Man Astronomical Society, is designed to “further stimulate and encourage interest in astronomy on the island”.

Maxine Cannon, managing director of IOMPO stamps and coins, said: “This shows you don’t need to travel to Northern Europe to witness such beauty; it was on our doorstep many times in 2024.”
