Parking charges are to be introduced at a historic West Yorkshire port.

Bradford Council said the charges will come into force at Ilkley Pool and Lido car park in Denton Road from November 1.

It comes after the cash-strapped local authority introduced a series of parking charges across the area, sparking anger among some residents.

Councilor Alex Ross-Shaw admitted parking charges were an “emotional issue” but said they were necessary due to the “current financial climate”.

Visitors are charged £1 to park for one hour between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Sunday, and £4 for parking for more than four hours.

Ross-Shaw, executive member for regeneration, planning and transport, said: “We know parking charges are always an emotional issue, but in the current financial climate we have had to make a number of tough choices to deliver a sustainable and manageable income format.

“Income from parking fees goes towards maintaining and improving infrastructure, enforcing regulations and investing in sustainable transport initiatives.

“We strive to have a consistent and fair approach across the area and have decided to introduce charges at Denton Road Car Park this year.”

The council said people taking swimming lessons at Bradford Aquatics or being ClubActive members will not have to pay and will be issued a parking permit covering the timetable for their lesson or membership.
