‘They Paid Their Debt to Society’

Lyle and Erik Menendez got a legit big win.

On Thursday, October 24, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced that he would formally ask the court to resentence the brothers’ decades-old murder convictions. Lyle and Erik have been behind bars since 1990, nearly a year after fatally shooting their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez. The two were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.

“We will recommend to the court (on Friday) that the sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole be abolished and that they be convicted of murder,” Gascón told reporters. ABC News . ““I believe they have paid their debt to society.”

Gascón said he wanted 50 years to life sentences for Eric and Lyle; That sentence could make them eligible for parole due to their age at the time of the murders, under California’s sobriety laws. (Both were under 26 when they killed their parents in their Beverly Hills home.)

The prosecutor emphasized that his recommendation did not guarantee the brothers’ freedom, as the decision would be left to a Los Angeles Superior Court judge.
