The top commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard warned Israel that it would face “painful consequences” after attacking Iran’s military facilities, local media reported on Monday.

Tasnim news agency quoted guards chief Hossein Salami as saying that Israel “failed to achieve its sinister goals” with Saturday’s air strikes.

In response to Tehran’s October 1 missile attack, Israel struck military facilities in retaliation for the killings of Iran-backed militant leaders and the commander of the Revolutionary Guard.

Salami said the Israeli attack was a sign of “miscalculation and desperation” at a time when Israel is fighting pro-Tehran militants in Gaza and Lebanon.

“The painful consequences of this for Israel are unimaginable,” Salami warned, according to Tasnim.

Iranian media downplayed the seriousness of the Israeli operation, signaling what analysts say is the Islamic Republic’s reluctance to further escalate tensions.

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Sunday that Israel’s attack that killed four soldiers “should neither be exaggerated nor underestimated.”

He called this a “miscalculation” by Israel.

President Masoud Pezeshkian said, “We are not seeking war, but we will defend the rights of our nation and our country.”

Pezeshkian added that Iran “will give an appropriate response to the aggression of the Zionist regime.”

Also Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated Iran’s “right to respond” and said Tehran “received indications” hours before Israel’s attack.

US news site Axios said on Saturday that Israel had “sent a message to Iran” ahead of the attack, warning it “against a response”.
