Body confirmed as missing Pontypridd woman

Police believe Joanne Jones traveled to Graigwen Road, Pontypridd, in the direction of Llanwonno Forest, before she disappeared.

The body found during the search for a missing woman has been confirmed as that of Joanne Jones, who disappeared six days ago.

Ms Jones, 49, was last seen at Vale Gardens, Pontypridd, Rhondda Cynon Taf. Search by police and wider community.

South Wales Police said a body had been found on Saturday night and on Sunday officers confirmed he had been formally identified.

Police said his family had expressed their gratitude to everyone involved in the search to find him and had now asked for privacy “so they can begin to come to terms with their loss”.

Det Chief Inspector Emma Hampton said: “I would like to express my condolences to Joanne’s family at what is a very sad time for them.

“I would also like to thank our colleagues in the emergency services and citizens who assisted in our search efforts last week.

“I can also confirm that we are not treating Joanne’s death as suspicious.”

Police called in mountain rescue volunteers, specialist search dogs and drones to search for Ms Jones, who was last seen at 09:45 BST on Monday, October 21.

Missing person flyers were also distributed to local dog walkers and hikers.

Before the identification was confirmed, Pontypridd MP Alex Davies-Jones described the discovery as “devastating” and said his heart was with “his loved ones and the whole community”.

Ms Davies-Jones, who is a junior minister at the Ministry of Justice, also wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “If anyone needs support at this difficult time, do not hesitate to contact us.”

Members of the public also joined the search for Ms Jones, while some scoured nearby Llanwonno Forest, saying they believed police were heading in that direction after being spotted on Graigwen Road.

Before the call, Superintendent Matt Rowlands had urged volunteers to pay attention to the “terrain and conditions” to avoid putting themselves in danger.

He said at the time: “I understand how heartbreaking this is for Joanne’s family and friends and we are grateful for the continued support the local community has offered over the last few days.”
