Bartica driver fined for drink driving

The driver, JOEL SUMRAH, 50, of Fourth Avenue, Bartica, was fined $200,000 after pleading guilty to drink driving. Sumrah appeared before Magistrate Teriq Mohammed at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court earlier this week.
The charge, laid under Section 39A(1) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act Chapter 51:02 as amended by Act 17 of 2022, arose from his breath alcohol level exceeding the prescribed legal limit.
Magistrate Mohammed imposed a fine of $200,000 with an alternative of three months imprisonment if the fine is not paid. This brings to mind penalties for drunk driving as authorities continue their efforts to enforce road safety laws.
