2 suspects arrested in more than 10 bank robberies in Portland-Vancouver area

Police have arrested two men they believe are responsible for more than 10 bank robberies in the Portland-Vancouver area, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

Police executed a search warrant at a home in Battle Ground around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday morning and arrested 31-year-old Andrew Bekman and 28-year-old Amira Askew.

Law enforcement seized clothing, guns, ballistic vests and stolen vehicles that the suspects said matched those they wore during the bank robberies. They also said they found a note that said: “This is a robbery. I have a gun. Empty your safe.”

Police say one of the banks Bekman and Askew robbed It was Umpqua Bank at Salmon Creek on Wednesday, November 6.

Police said a man and a woman were wearing masks during the robbery, and the man implied he had a gun. The duo escaped from the bank with an unknown amount of money.

Thereupon, the sheriff’s office issued a press release and asked for help from the public in identifying the robbers.

Deputies said a tip from the public led them to the suspects.

The sheriff’s office said the arrested duo confessed to the Umpqua Bank robbery and several others.
