    Maharashtra elections 2024: Bollywood stars, cricketers among millions to vote in assembly polls in Mumbai

    Bollywood stars, top businessmen and legendary athletes including Sachin Tendulkar joined millions of voters at the polls in India’s financial capital mumbai on Wednesday.

    More than 97 million people in the western state of Maharashtra are eligible to vote in parliamentary elections; About 10 million of them are in Mumbai, home to the Bollywood film industry and headquarters of the country’s largest companies.

    Maharashtra is a critical political battleground as it is one of the most developed regions of the country and one of the richest states. It sends 48 MPs (the second highest number) to India’s 543-seat national parliament.

    At least 400 candidates are standing in Mumbai alone. Election authorities set up more than 10,000 polling booths manned by 25,000 police personnel.

    The region’s legislature has 288 seats and is jointly led by Hindu ultranationalists. Shiv Sena Party led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi‘s Bharatiya Janata Party.

    Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and other celebrities participated in voting on Wednesday.

    More than 4,000 candidates are competing in the Maharashtra elections, which are seen as a battle between Mr Modi’s Hindu nationalist party and its allies and the opposition Indian National Congress and its partners. India’s leading Muslim party, Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen, is also in the fray.

    Vote counting will take place on November 23 and the results will be announced on the same day.

    Mumbai is one of the most populous cities, receiving tens of thousands of immigrants every year in search of work and a stable income.

    But it suffers from a growing population and crumbling infrastructure, air pollution, unaffordable medical care, an inadequate public transportation system and declining public services.
