‘The Wizard of Oz’ movie ruby slippers go up for auction 20 years after they were stolen

The iconic ruby slippers from the movie ‘The Wizard of Oz’ are up for auction.

The slippers worn by Judy Garland in the original 1939 movie are currently for sale at Heritage Auction with a bid of over $800,000. The next minimum bid was set at $825,000.

As of Thursday, there are 29 days left until the tender.

Heritage Auction said four pairs of ruby slippers have now been found to survive the 85 years since the film was made. Offered for sale at auction, the pair was sold to Michael Shaw in 1970 and became the pair’s “cross-matching sister shoes” on display at the Smithsonian Institution.

“The Ruby Slippers are a vintage pair of red silk fail heels from Innes Shoe Co.; The upper and heels are covered in handmade silk georgette, lined with white leather and the leather soles are painted red and orange felt is attached to the forefoot. every shoe. The bows are made from hand-cut bukra fabric and vary slightly in size. Rhinestones surround the edges of bows filled with bugle beads that surround the three center jewels,” Heritage Auction said.

“The color of this pair of Michael Shaw slippers is a rich burgundy, darker than any other known pair, likely the result of careful storage away from direct light,” the auction site said.

Shaw’s slippers had been missing for years after being stolen from the Judy Garland Museum, the Associated Press reported.

The AP reported that the slippers were stolen in 2005 by reformed mobster Terry Jon Martin. The slippers were eventually seized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 2018 after someone else tried to claim the insurance reward.

The AP said Martin pleaded guilty to smashing a display case at the museum and stealing the slippers.

The legendary slippers will now find a new home with a lucky bidder.
