Police say man who hitchhiked and stole a vehicle in Lincoln has been arrested

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Lincoln Police arrested a man who drove into a seemingly well-intentioned citizen and stole his car, according to court records.

Police officers were called to a gas station near 16th Street and Old Cheney Road just before 11 p.m. Thursday for a report of a stolen vehicle. They spoke with a man who reported his 2013 Chevy Equinox stolen.

She told officers she met 29-year-old Tyler Livengood earlier that night and agreed to give him a ride to the gas station. Once there, the victim went inside to buy something. Police wrote that he realized he had left his credit card in his vehicle and gave Livengood the keys to retrieve the card.

Livengood brought the card, but when the man left the store he realized his vehicle had been taken, according to the arrest report. Officers valued the vehicle at between $6,000 and $9,000.

However, the victim was tracking the vehicle using a tracking device he had previously planted inside, and officers tracked the vehicle to another gas station near Rosa Parks Way and South Coddington Boulevard.

They saw Livengood trying to refuel the stolen vehicle, according to testimony. He once tried to confront a police officer and walk away, but was detained a short time later.

Officers wrote that during a search of Livengood’s person, five 325-milligram hydrocodone pills were found. They also think Livengood tried to change the number on one of the plates and bent the other.

Livengood was charged with one count of theft by unlawful taking of more than $5,000 and one count of possession of a controlled substance. He was arraigned Friday and his bond was set at 10% of $5,000.

The next hearing date is scheduled for December 19.
