Colin Petersen: Bee Gees star, nicknamed ‘smiling face’, dies at the age of 78

Colin Petersen, one of the Bee Gees’ original band members, has passed away.

Peterson, 78, was the band’s original drummer and played in the early years of the superstar band, which produced worldwide hits including To Love Somebody.

Best of Bee Gees announced: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear friend Colin ‘Smiley’ Petersen.”

“He enriched our lives and united our group with love, care and respect. I’m not sure how we could go on without his bright smile and deep friendship. We love you, Colonel. Rest in peace.”

He earned the nickname “Smiling Face” after becoming a child actor in 1956 and starring in the movie of the same name.

Peterson is survived by his ex-wife, Joanne Newfield, and their son and Ben.

Petersen attended school in Redcliffe, Queensland, with brothers Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb; Here he developed an interest in music and became part of the formation of the Bee Gees, who conquered the music world.
