8 people died and 17 were injured in a knife attack on a vocational school in eastern China

BEIJING (AP) — Eight people were killed and 17 others were injured in a stabbing attack at a vocational school in the eastern Chinese city of Wuxi on Saturday, local police said.

The attack took place at around 18:30 local time at the Wuxi Institute of Vocational Arts and Technology in Yixing, a smaller city in Wuxi, Yixing police said in a statement.

The suspect, a 21-year-old male student surnamed Xu, was detained at the scene.

Police said Wu failed his exams and was unable to graduate and was dissatisfied with his salary at the internship. The statement stated that he decided to vent his anger through attack.

Videos circulating on Western social media platforms such as X show injured people lying on the street after the attack, while others rushed to help. On Chinese social media platforms such as Weibo, keyword searches for the attack reveal the police statement, but there is no video or image of the attack.

The Chinese government frequently censors internet content deemed overly sensitive or political. Most Western social media sites and search engines like Google are blocked behind what is known as the Great Firewall, which regulates what is accessible in China.

It was the second deadly attack in a week after a man drove his car into people at a sports facility in the southern city of Zhuhai, killing 35 people and injuring 43 others.

China has witnessed a series of attacks in which suspects randomly target the public.

A man who allegedly attacked children with a knife at a school in Beijing in October was detained. Five people were injured.

In September, three people died and 15 people were injured in a knife attack at a supermarket in Shanghai. Police said at the time that the suspect had personal financial disputes and came to Shanghai to “vent his anger.”

That same month, a Japanese student died after being stabbed on his way to school in the southern city of Shenzhen.
