Police identify suspect after fatal stabbing in south Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Police have released the identity of a suspect who allegedly stabbed and killed a woman in south Nashville Friday afternoon.

Nashville police arrested Florida man Roy Lomax Gardner for allegedly attacking and stabbing a woman in the face at 5:15 a.m. after sitting on a bus bench together at Harding Place on Antioch Pike. Police said surveillance video showed both men stood up as the bus began to approach and Gardner attacked the woman for no reason.

According to WeGo, a bus operator witnessed the incident and stopped the bus. Police said they were able to arrest the suspect because people in the adjacent parking lot heard the woman scream and held Gardner until officers arrived.

The WeGo bus was not involved in the incident.

WeGo officials said in a statement: “WeGo management and staff are saddened by the tragic incident that occurred today at the Harding Place bus stop.” he said. “Our thoughts are with the victim. We are assisting MNPD in its ongoing investigation and emphasize that the safety of our passengers and employees is paramount.”

Police said Gardner was injured when witnesses subdued him until officers arrived. He was admitted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. After he leaves the hospital, authorities will charge him with murder.

Police said Gardner has a criminal record in Florida, Georgia and Alabama. They said they weren’t sure when he arrived in Tennessee.
