Parents of New Buffalo woman found dead in Chicago high-rise win legal battle over her remains

CHICAGO (WNDU) – The parents of a Berrien County woman found dead in the stairwell of a Chicago high-rise may now have possession of her remains after a legal battle against the woman’s husband.

Caitlin Tracey was found dead on Oct. 27 in a high-rise where she and her husband had been staying that weekend, according to a police report. The report states that his foot was amputated and his body was found at the bottom of the stairwell.

Tracey’s husband reported her missing the day before she was found dead.

Tracey, who lives in New Buffalo, was listed as the victim of two ongoing domestic violence cases filed against her husband in Berrien County earlier this year.

Police are still trying to determine how Tracey died. Her husband has not been charged with her death at this time.

After weeks of legal limbo to decide who would have possession of his remains, a Chicago-area judge on Friday cleared the way for his parents to retrieve the bodies.

“The Tracey family can close this chapter and focus on mourning the loss of Caitlin and celebrating her extraordinary life,” Tracey’s attorney said in a statement.
