GARRETSON, SD (Dakota News Now) – An 81-year-old man was fatally injured in a crash in Minnehaha County on Thursday.

The crash happened around 6:19 p.m. on SD Highway 11, three miles north of Garretson.

Preliminary crash information indicates the driver of a 2020 Buick Encore was traveling northbound on SD Highway 11.

At the same time, the driver of a 2015 Kia Sorento was traveling eastbound on 250th Street when he failed to yield at the stop sign at the intersection with Hwy 11 and collided with an oncoming Buick.

The drivers of both vehicles suffered serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

The 81-year-old passenger in the Buick suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

Dense fog was a contributing factor to the accident. All those involved were wearing seat belts.

The names of the people involved were not released until family members were notified.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash. All information disclosed so far is preliminary information only.
