Stipe Miocic Beats Jon Jones?

UFC 309 is almost upon us, and with it comes another round MMAKO personnel estimates.

MMAKO’s Mat Riddle (@notMattRiddle), Drew Beaupre (@mmameditations), Chris de Santiago (@Chris_DSantiago) and Zain Bando (@ZainBando99) gather for every major UFC PPV to see who has the best predictions.

This week, Jon Jones defends his heavyweight belt against Stipe Miocic, and the team is split on who will win every fight on the main card. Check out their advanced predictions below.

Stipe Miocic

Checkmate Riddle: I’m picking Miocic to win, not for any real reason, but just because it would be the funniest thing that could happen. (Pick: Miocic)

Drew Beaupre: For all the talk that Jones could fight Alex Pereira or Tom Aspinall after UFC 309, I’d love to see Miocic foil those plans and miraculously reclaim the heavyweight title after more than three years away from the Octagon. I can’t pick the 42-year-old to win because of all the question marks surrounding his return, but I’m also not sure if Jones can win this fight as dominantly as many fans expect. (Selection: Jones)

Christopher de Santiago: I expect Jones to be a little better all around, but I believe Stipe has the power advantage, sees a real chance to catch Jones early in the first round. The longer the fight goes on the worse it gets for Miocic and I think “Bones” beat him in the 3rd and 4th rounds for the TKO finish. (Selection: Jones)

Zain Bando: Regardless of the noise out there, Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic is the most important heavyweight fight in the sport right now. All signs point to a Jones win, and Miocic may be rusty due to his long layoff. Unless Miocic takes his chance, Jones can pick him up on the outside and earn a late stoppage. Jones is better all around, which leads me to believe the fight will be relatively easy. (Selection: Jones)

Overall: 3-1 Jones

Charles Oliveira

Checkmate Riddle: I wouldn’t be surprised if Chandler knocks out Oliveira, but I’m pushing for ‘Do Bronx’ to win. I think he’s dangerous in more areas than Chandler, and he kept Chandler active during his extended layoff, which could give him an advantage. (Pick: Oliveira)

Drew Beaupre: A win over Oliveira would return Chandler to lightweight title contention, which would be an impressive feat considering he is 2-3 overall in the UFC and hasn’t fought in two years. Considering he’s taken a heavy break from training for the Conor McGregor fight, the idea of lining up alongside the former Bellator champion appeals to me, but Oliveira proved he’s still one of the best lightweights in the UFC in his controversial loss to Arman Tsarukyan. (Pick: Oliveira)

Christopher de Santiago:Chandler. On paper, I would probably go for Charles Oliveira due to the intensity of the schedule, but I think Chandler has a few tricks up his sleeve for this one after nearly a two-year absence. I think the intangibles will work well for Chandler in a situation where he could be fierce, more patient and more of a performer against a chip on his shoulder and a highly rated finisher to watch out for in Oliveira. (Choice: Chandler)

Zain Bando: The first fight was incredible, the second could have been even better. Unlike the main event, Michael Chandler presents fans with the opportunity to give an exciting fight, and Oliveira is the perfect opponent. If Oliveira is not careful, I think he will be caught and the status of the lightweight division will change completely. (Choice: Chandler)

Overall: 2-2 draw

Bo Nickal chokes Cody Brundage

Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

Checkmate Riddle: I think Craig is a good fight for Nickal, considering Nickal fought Cody Brundage at UFC 300. However, it’s still a favorable matchup for the UFC to make Nickal’s name big on the Jon Jones PPV. I have to settle for the result the UFC wants, which is Nickal W, but I don’t think it will be easy. (Selection: Nickal)

Drew Beaupre: Craig suffered back-to-back stoppage losses after a successful middleweight debut against Andre Muniz and now finds himself lined up as a major underdog against Nickal. I’d love to see “Bearjew” surprise the undefeated prospect with a rear submission, but this fight looks like another step on Nickal’s path to the middleweight Top 15. (Selection: Nickal)

Zain Bando: Another masterclass performance from Bo Nickal seems like a smart play here. Craig was in decline as the UFC continued to push him from the beginning of his career. I see Nickal getting an early opportunity to secure the application. (Selection: Nickal)

Overall: 3-0 Nickel

Karine Silva

Bob DeChiara – Imagn Images

Checkmate Riddle: I’m not partial to this fight, but I think Araujo is a super middling fighter that’s neither here nor there. Silva, on the other hand, has aspirations of reaching the top and hopefully can put an end to Araujo’s ten-game deciding streak with a good finish on Saturday night. (Selection: Silva)

Drew Beaupre: Silva clearly has momentum on his side after starting his UFC career with four straight wins, and while I don’t like how lopsided the current betting odds are, I have to pick “The Killer” to extend his unbeaten streak against Araujo. (Selection: Silva)

Zain Bando: This fight looks like the easiest fight to predict on the main card. Karine Silva has won nine fights in a row, while Viviane Araujo sits second in the UFC at 6-5 and will likely suffer another upset. I think Silva won by leaving by his own decision. (Selection: Silva)

Overall: 3-0 Silva

Mauricio Ruffy

Jason Silva-Imagn Images

Checkmate Riddle: I loved Ruffy’s debut and appearance in DWCS. He clearly has a striking and combative mind and the courage to carry it through all three rounds. Llontop will be replaced shortly and I think this is a terrible sign for him. (Choice: Ruffy)

Drew Beaupre: I understand the urgency of securing his first UFC win, but facing Ruffy on short notice after back-to-back defeats seems an ill-advised move for Llontop. Ruffy made a big statement in his promotional debut against Jamie Mullarkey in May, and putting the Brazilian in this spot to kick off the UFC 309 PPV seems like a way for the promotion to try to capitalize on the massive success that “Fighting Nerds” has already had this year. (Choice: Ruffy)

Zain Bando: This is a fight between two solid contenders at lightweight. Even though the fight changed to middleweight earlier in the week, Mauricio Ruffy has more advantages. He has won 10 of his 11 MMA bouts, including his successful UFC debut in May. His unorthodox style could cause problems for Llontop as I see him dominating wherever the challenge goes. (Choice: Ruffy)
