Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) on Friday temporarily suspended passenger services at Kotak Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) Metro Station following a fire in the basement of the station.

According to Mumbai Metro, after the incident was reported, fire brigades were alerted and dispatched to the spot. It was stated that passenger services were closed as a precaution.

“There are no reports of anyone being injured,” a civic official said.

He said eight fire trucks and other fire trucks were on the scene to bring the situation under control.

“Passenger services at BKC station have been temporarily closed due to a fire outside A4 Entrance/Exit, which caused smoke to enter the station. Fire crews are on duty. We have suspended our services for passenger safety. Senior officers of MMRC and DMRC are on the ground. For alternative boarding, please proceed to Bandra Colony station. Thank you for your understanding,” he said in a post on X.

The fire broke out around 13.10. The station was trapped at a depth of 40-50 feet with wooden boards, furniture and construction materials, causing heavy smoke in the area. It was completely under control as of 14.30.

BKC metro station is part of Mumbai’s first underground Metro or water line between Aarey Colony and Bandra-Kurla Complex. The 12.69 kilometer stretch between Aarey Colony and BKC is part of the 33.5 kilometer Colaba-Seepz-Aarey Metro line 3, which has received final clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS).

There are ten stations on the Aarey-BKC line providing connectivity to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Terminals 1 and 2 and Ghatkopar-Andheri-Versova Metro Line 1 at Marol Naka station.

There are 26 metro stations in the 33.5 km long Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro-3 Corridor, Mumbai’s first underground metro. The suburban rail will integrate with existing transport modes at around eight locations, including other Mumbai Metro lines and major rail terminals such as Mumbai CSMT and Churchgate.

The metro line will also connect six major employment and business centres: Nariman Point, Cuffe Parade, Fort, Lower Parel, BKC and SEEPZ/MIDC. According to officials, the line will provide easy access to more than 30 educational institutions, 13 hospitals, 14 religious places and 30 recreational facilities, as well as areas that are not connected to the suburban railway network, such as Kalbadevi, Girgoan, Worli. and international and domestic airports.
