Gaetz, a Florida Republican and staunch Trump defender, resigned from Congress on Wednesday. Trump announces Gaetz’s candidacy for attorney general. His resignation will end the House Ethics Committee’s years-long investigation of Gaetz. The committee was investigating whether Gaetz had engaged in sexual misconduct and illegal drug use, accepted improper gifts and tried to obstruct government investigations into his conduct.

Committee members were expected to vote Friday on whether to release their findings, according to multiple reports, but it’s unclear whether that will happen now that Gaetz has left Congress and the committee no longer has authority to conduct the investigation.

John Clune, an attorney representing an alleged victim of Gaetz, is pushing for the committee report to be made public “immediately.”

“Mr. Gaetz’s possible candidacy for Attorney General is a reversal in a truly dark series of events,” Clune told X. “He was a high school student and there were witnesses.”

Republican senators also say they want to see the House Ethics Committee report. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said Thursday he “absolutely” wants to see the committee’s findings.

“I don’t want there to be any limitations on what the Senate can consider,” Cornyn said.

The House Ethics Committee has been investigating Gaetz since 2021, but took a break while the Justice Department conducted its own Gaetz investigation into the sex trafficking of teenage girls. The ethics committee resumed its work in May 2023, shortly after Gaetz announced that the Justice Department was ending its investigation without filing charges against him.

Gaetz vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

In response to the new report, Gaetz told Fox News Digital: “These allegations are fabricated and constitute false testimony to Congress. This false libel, coming after a three-year criminal investigation, should be viewed with great skepticism.”

Gaetz faces GOP opposition

Gaetz has spent years ensnared in scandals that have jeopardized his confirmation as the nation’s top federal law enforcement official. The announcement was already facing Republican opposition just hours after it was made Wednesday.

“I don’t see him as a serious candidate,” said Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

Another GOP senator was more forthright in an interview with Fox News Digital.

“It will never be confirmed,” the Republican senator, who was granted anonymity to speak freely, told Fox News Digital.

Matt Gaetz sex trafficking investigation

The federal sex trafficking investigation, launched under Attorney General Bill Barr during Trump’s first term, focused on allegations that Gaetz and his onetime political ally Joel Greenberg paid underage girls and escorts or offered them gifts in exchange for sex.

Greenberg, a fellow Republican who served as a tax collector in Florida’s Seminole County, admitted in 2021 that he paid women and an underage girl to have sex with him and other men as part of a plea deal with prosecutors. These people’s names were not included in court documents when he pleaded guilty. Greenberg was sentenced to 11 years in prison in late 2022.

Federal investigators looked into Gaetz’s trip to the Bahamas with a group of women and a doctor who donated to his campaign and whether the women were paid or given gifts to have sex with men. They are not allowed to discuss the investigation publicly. Prosecutors also investigated whether Gaetz and his associates tried to secure government jobs for some women and examined Gaetz’s connections to the medical marijuana industry, including whether his associates sought to influence legislation Gaetz sponsored, the people said.
