FEMA workers going door to door in Naples

NAPLES, Fla. — FEMA went door to door at a manufactured home community in Naples on Thursday.

“Everyone in the declared county has the right to register,” said Lucas Kohler, FEMA Survivor Assistance Specialist. “Part of that right is accessibility. Not everyone may be notified that FEMA is in an area or know how to use a computer to register.”

FEMA staff urges people needing assistance to call the number provided if they are in a declared county.

That’s why experts who provide assistance to disaster victims, or DSAs, have gone door to door to let residents know they are there to help them.

Linda Kloman, who lives in Naples, told FOX 4’s Victoria Scott she didn’t register Thursday.

But Kloman said he appreciates the face-to-face interaction.

“I thought it was really nice to have them actually come to individuals’ homes in the neighborhood,” Kloman said. “It’s a complex process, and it’s helpful when they help.”

FEMA DSAs also wanted to make a clear point to residents.

“Just because people applied with flood insurance doesn’t mean they applied for FEMA assistance,” Kohler said. he said.

They said that people may hesitate to apply with their personal insurance due to high interest rates.

“So, if you have insurance and you know you won’t be covered, you can always request a non-coverage letter from your insurance,” Kohler says. he said. “Don’t contact them. Just ask them for a letter stating they are not covered.”

FEMA staff said the agency is not allowed to multiply benefits if your personal insurance covers you.

But they said the opt-out letter gave them the green light to start helping.

There are also some important dates to keep in mind.

“If you have damage, the deadline for Helene is November 27th and for Milton it is December 11th,” Kohler said.

You can also register online or using FEMA application.
