Devin Owen Porter Jr. will be sentenced to life in prison for his role in the mass shooting in downtown Shreveport

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) – INFORMATION PROVIDED BY CADDO DA OFFICE

A Shreveport man convicted in October of leading a mass shooting that left a man dead downtown last year must spend the rest of his natural life in prison, a Shreveport judge ruled Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024.

Devin Owen Porter Jr.The 21-year-old man was convicted of a mass shooting at the Red River entertainment district on Oct. 25 and sentenced to mandatory life in prison without the benefit of probation, parole or suspended sentence for firing the gun that killed 32-year-old Jacorvin Taylor. . Six more people were seriously injured by gunfire from Porter and his accomplices, prompting police officers to take a high-speed flight across the city.

On the six convictions for attempted murder, District Judge Chris Victory again sentenced Porter to 40 years hard labor on each count, without probation, parole or suspension of sentence. For an officer to be convicted of aggravated escape, the officer must be sentenced to five years of hard labor. All sentences must be served simultaneously.

On March 25, 2023, Porter and at least two hitmen arrived at the intersection of Texas and Market streets in downtown Shreveport in a stolen vehicle. They opened fire on a group of people heading towards one of the clubs in the city centre. At least seven people were shot and one of the victims, 32-year-old Jacorvin Taylor, was fatally wounded. At least 60 shots were fired, with Porter responsible for at least 33 shots, including the fatal bullet. The attackers then fled in a stolen car. Shreveport police officers pursued the shooters from the intersection of Midway Avenue and Hearne Boulevard to Willie Mays Street, reaching speeds of more than 100 miles per hour, running red lights and driving through residential neighborhoods. The 4 people in the vehicle abandoned the vehicle and ran away. Porter was captured by Shreveport police just south of the Peach Street Apartments complex.

Police found three AR-style handguns in or near the abandoned car. These were tested and all determined to be responsible for the 60 bullets fired in the downtown shooting. DNA from a ski mask found near the vehicle was linked to Porter. Surveillance video from the scene of the shooting captured Porter and an accomplice in the act. Searches of Porter’s social media and cell phone further linked him to the murder weapon.

An arrest warrant was also issued for a suspect who was arrested in Pennsylvania and awaiting extradition. He also faces pending charges in Pennsylvania.
