A man was hospitalized with serious injuries after being struck by a pickup truck on Route 1 in downtown Hampton on Monday, according to police.

Route 1 (Lafayette Road) between the Swain Court and High Street traffic lights was closed until 8 p.m. due to the crash, according to police.

Reno said evidence at the scene and witness statements led investigators to determine that the pedestrian left Greg’s on the east side of Lafayette Road and began crossing to the west side of the road. The pickup was traveling northbound on Lafayette Road in the proper travel lane.

Investigators said they determined the pedestrian entered the roadway approximately 10 to 15 feet south of the marked crosswalk after passing between vehicles parked on the east side of the roadway.

“The pickup truck struck the pedestrian in this area of the travel lane,” Reno said. “While the pickup truck stopped just south of the marked crosswalk, the pedestrian was pushed just north of the crosswalk. After reviewing all necessary evidence, it has been determined that no charges will be filed against the operator at this time.”

Reno said the identities of the parties involved are being withheld at this time.

The Hampton Police Department is reminding pedestrians about the importance of using marked crosswalks to ensure safer crossing.

“In addition to stopping for pedestrians at crosswalks, we also remind drivers to do their part by paying attention to pedestrian traffic in congested areas,” he said.

The Hampton Police Department was assisted by Hampton Fire and Rescue and New Hampshire State Police.
