What is NAD? The supplement can help increase longevity, energy, and strength. Here’s what doctors say about its benefits and side effects

LOS ANGELES– A relatively new dietary supplement is gaining a lot of attention – it’s called NAD.

Many influencers and podcasters are touting the supplement, claiming that NAD, which stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, can reverse the aging process and increase energy, sharpness, and strength. Preliminary research looks promising, but will it really work?

On the top shelf of the Vitamin Shoppe in Pasadena, you’ll find the sought-after supplement store manager Gabriel Carranza says he can’t keep in stock.

“We sell out pretty frequently, so we probably get about three or four bottles every week, and they probably sell out within two weeks of us getting them,” Carranza said.

So what are the rumors about NAD? Early science shows it may help increase longevity. Eager customers convinced Fredy Barroso, 37, of North Hollywood, to try it himself.

“We’re growing up at this age, as we all are, and I’ve heard good things about it,” Barroso said.

Dr. Sarah Espinoza, director Translation Geroscience At Cedars-Sinai, he and his colleagues are studying NAD, a coenzyme that is key to metabolism and cellular functions.

“We know that levels decline with age and that there is an association with age-related diseases,” he said.

Age-related diseases include dementia, diabetes and vascular diseases. Side effects may include headache, fatigue, nausea and indigestion. Early human studies focused on safety.

“Taking it for a relatively short period of time, such as a few weeks, has no significant adverse effects. It also increases NAD levels in cells in the blood,” Espinoza said.

This was a small study, and while NAD levels increased, researchers found no significant benefit in terms of increased cognition.

Some animal studies suggest that increasing NAD may improve mitochondrial function, insulin regulation, and cognition, but these benefits have not yet been proven in human studies.

“We may be able to show benefit with future larger trials, but based on the currently available evidence I would say this is not recommended,” he said.

To date, most research has been done on oral supplements, but expensive NAD Intravenous infusions and injectable medications are growing in popularity. Espinoza said there’s no evidence to suggest it helps like pills.

NAD vials can range from $20 to $150 per month, depending on the brand and dosage. For Barroso, this is a small price to pay for something he hopes will bring great benefits.

“You’re trying to keep yourself young. You’re trying to keep yourself healthy,” he said.
