Local firefighter of more than 30 years dies after battle with ALS

CHILI, NY — A firefighter who volunteered in Monroe County for more than 30 years has died after a battle with ALS.

The Chilean Fire Department, where he has volunteered for more than 20 years, made the announcement on Facebook. The department says Michael Saporito Sr., known as Zippy, responded to 2,600 fires or other incidents. He spent almost 8,000 hours volunteering.

Chile Deputy Fire Chief Michael Lopez made the following statement:

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Saporito Sr., a beloved member of the Chilean Fire Department, known as Zippy, after a courageous battle with ALS.”

“Zippy has devoted more than 30 years to volunteering as a firefighter in Monroe County, with more than 20 of those years spent at Chili’s. During his time with CFD, he was a committed and dedicated member, responding to approximately 2,600 incidents and contributing approximately 8,000 recorded hours of volunteer service. “His impact on our department and our community has been extraordinary.”

“We ask that you keep the Saporito family, Zippy’s friends, and fellow firefighters in your thoughts and prayers as we all mourn his loss.”
