Knife-wielding man chased by supermarket staff after stabbing cashier during robbery

A knife-wielding man was chased by brave supermarket staff after stabbing a female cashier.

Ross Barratt stormed the Aldi store in Glasgow’s Cardonald on March 4 last year with a desperate bid for cash.

The 42-year-old employee, who was stabbed by the 44-year-old man who asked him to open the safe, was injured for life.

When Barratt was unable to get his hands on the money, he sped out of the store in Paisley Road West.

Jurors at the High Court in Glasgow heard two workers decided to attack the armed Barratt and initially pursued him on foot.

At that time, a man was passing by with his two sons and stopped to help catch the robber.

Two Aldi workers got on the bike before the pair and the father jumped out when he saw Barratt after driving a short distance.

One of the sons told the hearing there had been a “verbal argument” in the street and he remembered Barratt wearing a T-shirt that looked like an orange Rangers jersey.

The bandit, described as the “aggressor”, was heard saying, “Let’s get it.”

Before the men got into the car, Barratt fled again and followed him to a tower block in Tinwald Road, about half a mile from Aldi.

The son said: “One of the Aldi staff came out, ran across the road and followed the man down the alley into some high-rise flats.”

Barratt fled to a property there.

After Barratt injured himself while running from the store, police arrived at the scene and followed a trail of blood.

Officers found him in a pool of blood on the sixth floor after breaking in.

It emerged that Barratt went on to attack another man who lived there.

Describing the scene, PC Gary Hutchinson said: “A male walked towards her and appeared covered in blood.

“He had a big scar on his face. He was calm to us but looked shaken.

“It was clear something was going on.”

Barratt was arrested for the raid on Aldi and the attack on the flat.

During the trial he pleaded guilty to assault and attempted robbery, threatening behavior and possession of a knife.

Barratt had denied attempting to kill the man.

Instead, he was found guilty of assaulting the man, causing him serious injury, permanent disfigurement and endangering his life.

Jurors concluded he was acting under provocation at the time.

Following the verdict, prosecutor Kath Harper KC revealed Barratt had more than 40 previous convictions, including for violence, dishonesty and drugs.

Judge Alistair Watson remanded Barratt in custody with sentencing adjourned until next month.

He told Barratt: “These are clearly extremely serious matters.

“The court needs to assess what level of risk you may pose in the future.

“It is clear that you are a man who has difficulty with drugs. “I would be interested in getting a broader picture of who you are and what has led you to this desperate situation.”
