Castellanos’ Entering the Transfer Portal Signals a New Era

Young point guard Thomas Castellanos, who was on the bench for Boston College’s game against Syracuse last week, which the Eagles won, made the following decision: enter the transfer portal, according to various sources.

Castellanos was benched in favor of FIU transfer Grayson James during last weekend’s game against the Orange, and as a result the team decided to take a short break from activities. This breakout caused the Eagles to lose one of their signal callers, but the real effects could be much greater than that.

While first-year head coach Bill O’Brien has added some key players to the transfer portal, he is still operating a roster comprised mostly of players who committed to Boston College last season. Just one win away from bowl eligibility, BC’s comeback was harsh; This result some attribute directly to the coaching work done by O’Brien and his staff.

But for much of the progress O’Brien and his team have made, some facts are still emerging, and they play a role in Castellanos’ decision. Make no mistake, the move for James was a calculated move by O’Brien and his team and was certainly not taken lightly. As ugly as it may seem from the outside, it represents a transition to a new reality for Boston College football.

And that reality is one that Thomas Castellanos no longer wants to be a part of. The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday against SMU at 3:30 PM ET.
