Lost Hiker Found Alive in Cold Weather

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office (SMCSO) announced the rescue of a hiker who was lost for 12 hours in “cold weather” in the Santa Cruz Mountains in California’s San Mateo County on Saturday, November 9. Facebook’s press release On Tuesday, November 12.

The woman, whose identity has not been publicly released, and a group of hikers were in Loma Mar, about 50 miles south of San Francisco, on Nov. 9. Around 4 p.m., he went for a walk alone on Old Haul Road. He was at Loma Mar but did not return to the group until sunset. This led the group to search for him, but with no real success they called SMCSO.

Twenty-five volunteers, SMCSO deputies and a California Highway Patrol helicopter began the search. Search and rescue volunteers from the SMCSO Emergency Services Bureau were then sent to the area.

Around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 10, crews heard the hiker responding to volunteers’ shouts. It was discovered 500 meters down a very steep hill on the banks of Pescadero Creek. When he was found, he was administered basic first aid and was deemed uninjured, but he was suffering from fatigue and was “very cold,” according to SMCSO.

It took an extra hour to get him off the top. American Medical Response paramedics then transported him and performed an evaluation. He was cleared and returned to his group.

“I applaud our dedicated volunteers for finding the missing hiker under extremely challenging conditions. Their efforts saved this woman’s life,” SMCSO Sheriff Christina Corpus said in the press release.

“This is one of several lost hikers rescued by our Sheriff’s deputies and volunteers over the last several months,” Corpus added. β€œIt is very important to remember the dangers of hiking, especially at night and in unfamiliar areas.”
