WAUKESHA, Wis. – A. Waukesha County The mother faces charges after police say she left her 12-year-old son on the side of the highway.

The child was left on the side of I-94 at Calhoun Road on Thursday, Nov. 7. Waukesha County Sheriff’s deputies said the incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. It was about 50 degrees outside and traffic was moving at 70 miles per hour.

Flor Escalante, 43, drove her 12-year-old son to Sylvan Learning Center, authorities said. Brookfield When the two got into an argument about the boy’s grades. Deputies say the argument prompted Escalante to pull over. His son got out of the car and he took off.

Court records show Escalante told police that after leaving his son on the side of this interstate, he made a U-turn to return but was unable to find him. So he went straight to Sylvan Learning.

After finding the child, deputies went to Sylvan and arrested Escalante. Court records say the woman told police she did this because she felt like her son didn’t appreciate everything he did for her. Escalante said he worked multiple jobs and told the boy to finish walking about two miles to Sylvan so he could understand “what labor is.”

FOX6 News spoke with a family member who did not want to speak on camera. This person told FOX6 News he didn’t expect this from the mother, but the children were safe and staying with their family.

Escalante is now accused of abandoning and neglecting the child. Appeared on stage for the first time Waukesha County Court on Friday, November 8. Escalante was released from jail on $500 bail.
