Senate Republicans have nominated Senate Minority Whip to replace Mitch McConnell as majority leader, casting him as the main force to challenge the president-elect Donald Trump‘s agenda.

The South Dakotan defeated Florida Sen. Rick Scott, a favorite of Trump allies like Elon Musk, and Texas Sen. John Cornyn, who previously served as the whip.

Trump and Thune have clashed before, and at one point the newly elected President encouraged South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem to challenge Thune for the seat.

After the minority supported Trump, the two appear to have put their differences aside.
