Man ‘escaped’ and fatally stabbed woman while chasing her, police told

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A man told police he “snap” his partner before fatally stabbing him in broad daylight on South Division Boulevard in front of multiple witnesses and security cameras.

Lavonia Lucille Parham, 54, was stabbed to death on Nov. 6 in South Division near Goodrich Street SE.

Michael Anthony Rose, 60, who police say stabbed himself multiple times after killing Parham, is charged with open murder and carrying a concealed weapon, a fourth offense.

“Rose stated that they were using drugs at the time of this incident and that he sometimes did ‘stupid things’ when he was on drugs,” Grand Rapids police Detective Damon Lange wrote in a probable cause affidavit.

Parham was a mother of six children, according to GoFundMe.

Police responded around 9:20 a.m. to a report of a stabbing with one victim on the ground. Later reports stated that the man stabbed himself.

Jonathan Hart, the first officer on the scene, pulled Rose off the woman and began providing her with medical care. Others soon began providing treatment to both.

The woman was unable to receive medical attention and was pronounced dead at 9:37 a.m. Rose was taken to hospital and eventually regained consciousness. Witnesses identified Rose as the person who stabbed him, police said.

Witnesses told police that Parham and Rose had been known to have been in a domestic relationship for some time. He said the two were arguing when Rose pulled a hidden knife from his jacket sleeve.

“Witnesses stated that Rose chased the victim with a knife and pushed him to the ground,” Lange wrote in his statement. Rose then climbed on top of the victim and began stabbing him multiple times with his knife. Eyewitnesses said that when the victim stopped moving, Rose began stabbing him. This is when Ofc. Hart came and pulled Rose off the victim…”

Lange added: “This occurred in broad daylight with multiple people in the area.”

Rose told police she and Parham had been together for many years.

“Rose stated that she and Parham had argued and that she had ‘cracked up,'” the detective wrote.

Police said Rose bought the knife from a local store for safekeeping. Police said they took responsibility for the murder.

He was released on parole until October 10, 2025, for fourth-degree arson.

State Department of Corrections records showed the man had previous convictions for assault with intent to inflict great bodily harm less than murder and assault with a dangerous weapon.
