Hundreds of “wanted” posters featuring photos of Jewish faculty members were discovered at the University of Rochester over the weekend; The school’s president said acts of anti-Semitism “will not be tolerated”.

Posters criticizing faculty members for their response to the Oct. 7 attacks or alleged ties to Israel’s war effort in Gaza were found tacked to walls, floors and chalkboards at the school’s western New York campus Sunday night. The Rochester Beacon reported.

The posters accuse faculty members of “abuse of power and racism” and supporting “ethnic cleansing” and “displacement of Palestinians.”

“I want to make it as clear as I can that the University of Rochester strongly condemns the recent display of ‘Wanted’ posters targeting the university’s senior leaders and members of our faculty, staff and Board of Trustees,” said Sarah Mangelsdorf, university president. He said in a statement on Tuesday:. “This action is disturbing, divisive, frightening and contrary to our values ​​as a university.”

Mangelsdorf noted: “Many of those depicted appear to have been targeted because they are members of our Jewish community. We see this as antisemitism that will not be tolerated at our university. This is not who we are. “This goes against everything we stand for, and we have an obligation to reject it.”

The school’s Department of Public Safety is investigating the vandalism and said in a statement that it would exhaust “all available resources to gather evidence and hold those involved accountable for their actions.”

Joy Getnick, executive director of UofR Hillel, who was featured on one of the posters, said the group has since reached out to the Jewish Federation of Rochester, the Anti-Defamation League, Hillel International and the Safe Community Network to determine its next steps. .

“They disproportionately excluded Jewish faculty and staff and used language that spread harmful, antisemitic ideas about Jewish people and Jewish natives,” he said, adding that he hoped the school’s investigation would lead to accountability, “meaningful education, and healing.”

While some students at the private research institution have been protesting the university’s financial ties to Israel by organizing demonstrations, sit-ins and camps since last October, no group has claimed responsibility for the posters.

According to the publication, the university has exposure to $7.8 million in Israel-related investments through its Long-Term Investment Pool, which accounts for 0.2% of the total portfolio.

Still, the school’s Students for Justice in Palestine chapter demands “the complete dismantling of Israeli institutions and companies complicit in the oppression of Palestinians,” in a statement following a demonstration in October.
