Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie has warned First Minister John Swinney not to take his party’s votes at face value to get the SNP budget through the Scottish Parliament.

Speaking at the party’s autumn conference in Greenock, Harvie said the Greens had a responsibility to engage in the process with good faith and integrity.

But he said John Swinney knew at his expense that the Greens were the only party to cut the SNP budget.

The comment refers to the 2009 budget in which the Greens repeatedly blocked a £33 million home insulation programme.

Alex Salmond, who died earlier this month aged 69, was first minister at the time, while John Swinney was chancellor of the exchequer.

The SNP are currently in power at Holyrood but they govern as a minority government.

This means they must rely on support from other parties to pass legislation.

The Greens were in a power-sharing agreement with the SNP until April, when then-first minister Humza Yousaf kicked the smaller party out of government.

The Scottish government has since halted some policies supported by the Greens, including nature restoration funding and a pilot to scrap top rail fares.

During his opening speech, Harvie called on the SNP to take back its “broken promises”.
