Las Vegas elementary school repeatedly attacked by thieves, records show

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Burglars hit John S. Park elementary school hard on June 13th.

A Clark County School District police officer was called there about a possible copper wire theft. The CCSD police report shows seven air conditioning units were completely disassembled and damage was estimated at $75,000.

Later on July 20, as contractors were taking measurements to correct damage from June, a staff member was told only seven units were damaged, but it turned out the number was nine.

School officials later suspected two more units had been damaged recently.

A police report says staff members looked at security cameras and saw school intruders early that morning. One of them saw three people “walking across the awning of the building,” the report states.

The report also stated that “items were thrown onto the playground from rooftop air conditioning units.” Three people were seen collecting the items and placing them in the shopping cart.

Just six days later, another CCSD police report states that a guard heard a loud crash around 5:25 a.m., saw a man and woman near the parking lot, and saw “some air conditioning parts on top of an overturned car.”

He said the woman turned and looked at him while he was on the phone and both men ran away.

On July 30, another theft was reported overnight at John S. Park Elementary School, where three air conditioning units were damaged. Police reports show air conditioning parts were found on the floor.

The next day, a CCSD police report shows an office manager telling police: “This was the sixth time someone has destroyed air conditioning units and stolen parts.”

“In addition, since the structure of the school is low from the ground, the roof can be easily reached,” he said.

In the same report, a police officer mentioned extra patrol duties from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m.

A school principal estimated the damage at $120,000 and told police that similar crimes had been committed at some businesses.

Police reports also indicate that people between the ages of 18 and 30 were involved in the incident.

In a report, school officials stated that the suspects stole cooling cores from air conditioning units.

No suspects were identified in any reports.
