Ghana Roads Authority strike will not stop road projects – Ministry of Roads

The Ministry of Roads and Highways has assured the public that the ongoing strike by Ghana Highways Authority (GHA) employees will not disrupt any ongoing road projects across the country.

The Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Nasir Yartey, gave these assurances during an interview on the subject. Citi Breakfast Show With Bernard Avle on Tuesday, November 12th.

Yartey acknowledged that although the strike caused concern, the Ministry was taking measures to ensure that projects proceed smoothly.

Yartey explained that most government-funded road projects are managed by independent contractors operating under binding contracts and overseen by external consultants.

He noted that this structure provides a buffer against potential disruptions that could result from GHA staff strikes, as day-to-day project activities are handled by private contractors rather than GHA staff.

He also emphasized that the Ministry is committed to meeting project timelines and maintaining progress on infrastructure development, assuring the public that measures are being taken to avoid any delays.

“I can assure you that all ongoing road projects will continue uninterrupted and the Ministry does not expect any road projects to come to a halt. “These are road projects undertaken by contractors and in many cases overseen by consultants, and are under strict contracts, so we do not expect any road projects to be stalled.”

However, Mr Yartey acknowledged the concerns of striking workers and called for dialogue and peaceful participation.

He stated that it would be in the interest of both the Ministry and GHA employees to resolve the issues amicably and through constructive negotiations.

He expressed confidence in the process recommended by the Labor Commission and emphasized that dialogue could help address workers’ grievances without negatively impacting the Ministry’s larger infrastructure goals.

“I would like to appeal to the union that we are one family and therefore they should allow us to continue to consult and participate so that at the end of the day we can all find an amicable solution as stated by the Labor Commission.”

The GHA workers’ strike is a direct response to the government’s refusal to halt the implementation of the controversial National Highways Authority Act 2024 (Act 1118).

At the center of the dispute is the demand for the dismissal of two important officials: Eng. Ghana Highways Authority (GHA) Chairman IK Mensah and Eng. Collins B. Donkor, Chief Executive Officer of the NRA.
