The game is in beta for now, which means the Times is testing the game to see if it’s popular before adding it to the site’s Games app. You can play for free every day for the next few weeks; Then we will have to see if it will be permanent.

How to play Connections: Sports Edition

The rules are almost the same as the regular game. You are given 16 words and asked to sort them into four groups that are related in some way. The main difference is that all words and categories have some kind of sports connection. Sometimes the categories seem obvious, but the game tries to trick you by using sports-related words that can fit into more than one group. And the four groups of words have different levels of difficulty. Yellow is the easiest, purple is the hardest, but you won’t know which color group is which until you solve the puzzle.

But you don’t have to be a sports obsessive to crack Connections: Sports Edition; but it helps to have some knowledge of a number of different sports and athletes. Words may include player names, team names, or sports-related events.
