Fugitive Singaporean lawyer Charles Yeo detained in UK, preparing for extradition hearing

According to the UK Home Office website, Singapore is among the countries that have a formal extradition agreement with the UK.

Being a Category 2B country, this means it must prepare a case to support the extradition request.

Extradition requests from Category 2 areas must be decided by both the Secretary of State and the courts.

Once a request is made to the UK Secretary of State, he or she decides whether to document the request. If the case continues, the case will be sent to court and the judge will decide whether to issue an arrest warrant.

After the person is arrested and referred to the courthouse, preliminary hearings are held before the extradition hearing.

After the extradition hearing, the case goes to the Secretary of State, who decides whether to grant extradition.

The person may make any representation as to why the case should not be returned within four weeks after it is referred to the Secretary of State.

If the extradition continues, the person can appeal to the Supreme Court within 14 days. If the Supreme Court allows extradition, the person may appeal to the Supreme Court.

Appeals to the Supreme Court can only be made if the Supreme Court certifies that the case involves a legal issue of general public importance.

If there is no objection, the person must be extradited within 28 days from the decision of the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
