Windsor football continues on its way with victory against Vintage

Windsor 14, Vintage 7

In the fight between strong teams fighting for their post-season survival, Friday’s showdown between Windsor and Vintage gave the expected result.

Thanks to a few timely, game-changing moments, the Jaguars got the much-needed victory.

Windsor edged Vintage to improve to 6-2 on the year and 1-2 in the Redwood Empire Conference-Adobe division.

“Our team stepped up,” Windsor coach DJ Sexton said. “This is our first win in the super league and this league is no joke. Every match is a play-off style match. Our team fought hard tonight and did a great job. “Defensively, in the second half, there was stop after stop.”

The Jaguars were without starting forward Hayden Anderson due to injury. But they still found a way; thanks largely to the game-breaking contribution of young defender Semere Berhe.

With Vintage leading 7-0 and heading into Windsor territory, the Crushers made a straight pass. Berhe caught the pass and ran back 30 yards to flip the script.

“It was an incredible high school football game,” Sexton said. “I changed the whole momentum of the game.”

Windsor capitalized on the momentum and tied the game on a 4-yard touchdown run by Wyatt Morris with 30 seconds left in the first half.

Then, with six minutes left in the third quarter, Morris broke up a 21-yard touchdown run for his final score of the game.

Morris rushed for 237 yards and two touchdowns on 35 carries.

“This was one of those ground-and-pound games against a very physical team,” Sexton said. “But our offensive line did a great job of moving the line of scrimmage and opening up the lanes, and (Morris) was cutting off arm tackles all night long.”

Sexton also praised the play of senior fullback Joran Herrguth, who played a key role in Windsor’s success running the ball.

“There were some big pegs in the apartment to move the chains,” Sexton said. “He also blocked for Wyatt all night long. I did a great job beating the backs. A lot of iso plays, a lot of zone plays, he did a great job. That’s why Wyatt had so many yards; the O-line and Joran Great job from.”

Windsor will now set its sights on next week’s matchup with Rancho Cotate. Vintage (5-3, 1-2) is scheduled to face San Marin next week.

Maria Carrillo 59, Santa Rosa 12

Maria Carrillo leaned on a balanced offensive attack to cruise to another lopsided victory.

The Pumas beat Santa Rosa to improve to 7-1 on the season and 3-0 in REC-Bay play.

Cooper Bluestone threw for 118 yards and two touchdowns in the first quarter alone, helping Maria Carrillo take an insurmountable five-point lead early in the evening.

“Santa Rosa seemed to come in with the mentality that they wanted to take some chances to fill the field and defend our run,” Maria Carrillo coach Jay Higgins said. “Cooper has done a great job. … He’s done a great job all season long. He’s very smart; he has a complete understanding and control of our offense. He’s a great competitor. He’s a quiet leader. He’s not a vocal leader, he’s a quiet leader; he goes out and He does his job and has great respect for his teammates.”

Senior Griffen Zucco caught two passes for 108 yards and a touchdown. Ryan Braga rushed for 54 yards and a touchdown on seven carries, leading Maria Carrillo’s dominant offense.

Shooter Maica Rivas also had a great night, according to Higgins. He returned four touchdowns on 10 kickoffs and also had a 22-yard field goal.

Daniel Mills for Santa Rosa broke the 67-yard touchdown run. Rashai Thompson rushed for 70 yards on 15 carries.

Andres Nandallapa had an interception for the Panthers and Mateo Ponce had a sack.

Analy 56, Montgomery 49

Analy’s offensive line paved the way for a dominant offensive performance that helped him get back on track after a rough month.

The Tigers improved to 2-6 on the season and 1-2 in REC-Bay play en route to a home win over Montgomery.

“This was a big win for us,” Analy coach Dan Bourdon said. “We’ve been hit and we’re still getting hit. We’ve got some new guys on board and they’re getting the job done. We’ve got a young group, but it’s a group we think is talented. It was good to see them put some things together over the course of four quarters.

Bourdon praised the play of Analy’s entire starting offensive line: Wes Bush, Wyatt O’Brien, Ioan Ramos, Jesse Aaron Padron Gonzalez and Nick Mason.

“Our offensive line played great,” Bourdon said. “We ran the ball well, we really controlled the game on the field. Then we made big plays with the passing game when we needed it.”

Matthew Medina connected with Oliver Sherwin for a long touchdown on the Tigers’ first play from scrimmage. Victor Villarreal and Brantz Jacobs scored three goals each.

With this loss, Montgomery dropped to 3-5 on the season and 0-3 in league play.

“Our guys are still learning. Most of our main players are sophomores, so they’re learning how to win and how to handle things,” Montgomery coach Vertis Patton said. “These kids are going to be really good in the next few years. Our midfielder is a second-year student. (The cornerbacks) are sophomores, our safety is a sophomore, our quarterback is a sophomore, our running back is a sophomore — we have all these young guys who are in big positions on the varsity team and they’re competing. … They continue to fight.”

Thor Boswell went 15-for-35 passing for 237 yards and three touchdowns for Montgomery. Joe Laqere rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.

Owen Grafe caught seven passes for 126 yards and a touchdown. He also returned a kickoff for a touchdown.
