Waukesha residents and business owners worried about rat problem

WAUKESHA — A Waukesha resident reached an unusual milestone: he caught his 40th mouse this year.

Although mice have been a problem on his property for two years, Scott Boris said rodent numbers have increased significantly in 2024.

“You can hear what sounds like squirrels digging, so we go on mouse walks with my flashlight,” Boris explained.

Footage from cameras placed in his backyard shows mice have been digging near his property for the past few months.

Every day before work, Boris tries to catch mice using various baits such as peanut butter, hot dogs and now bacon grease.

“I’m trying to make the community understand what we’re up against,” Boris said, showing his neighbor the trash can. “I opened my hatch and there were two people lying there.”

Boris is not alone in his disappointments. Many Waukesha residents voiced their concerns online, sharing stories of rats damaging homes, businesses and vehicles.

“It’s everywhere, especially around the river and Main Street,” said Jose Suarez, owner of Dave’s Restaurant in downtown Waukesha.

Suarez has seen rats in the alley behind his business and keeps his doors closed to prevent them from getting in.

The City of Waukesha stated that the number of mouse complaints is 73 in 2024, compared to 124 at this time last year.

City officials said they educate homeowners on how to prevent mice, but it’s ultimately the property owner’s responsibility.

The city recommends removing outdoor food sources, covering trash cans with tight lids and emptying them regularly.

However, some residents think that the municipality’s response was not sufficient.

“How many rats do we need to catch as a community in one night to start depopulating?” Boris said. “I would like to see the city take further action or at least provide better guidance.”

The municipality follows up on all complaints and sends mail to affected neighborhoods. If people have concerns they can contact The city’s Department of Community Development.
