Analyst says peace deal could hurt Kiev as Trump wants to prove he can keep his promises

Donald Trump would be willing to pressure Ukraine to accept a cease-fire agreement to prove to his domestic public that he can deliver on his promises, a former US military adviser said.

Trump had previously promised to quickly end the Ukraine war if he returned to the White House, but did not explain how he would achieve this.

Mark Voyger, former special advisor to the commander of US Army Europe for Russian and Eurasian Affairs, told Sky News’ The World that Trump would likely seek “peace for peace’s sake.”

“In my view, he would be willing to put pressure on Ukraine to achieve peace – not for the sake of justice or to restore Ukraine’s sovereignty and punish Russian aggression, but to achieve peace for the sake of peace itself. So he can actually fulfill his promise to his base,” he said. .

Mr. Voyger said any deal put forward when Trump returns to office would likely be a result of pressure on Ukraine “by threatening to withhold vital aid,” adding that Trump did not have “any leverage to influence Putin’s behavior.”

Asked whether Trump’s new presidency was damaging Ukraine’s fortunes, Mr. Voyger said it was.

“(Trump) will actually be more likely to work with autocrats,” he said. “He has autocratic instincts as a personal trait. He is an isolationist… this behavior undermines NATO and transatlantic solidarity and ultimately jeopardizes the foundations of the international order as we know it.”
