Agatha All Along’s Lead Makeup Artist Reveals Her Intense Way to Look for the Wicked Witch of the West, And Now I’m Even More Impressed

The episode saw many of the main characters dressed as iconic characters. Kathryn HahnAgatha Harkness was designed as the Wicked Witch of the West. When I saw the episode for the first time, I was amazed by its appearance. But after speaking with the head of the show’s makeup team on behalf of CinemaBlend, I was even more impressed with how everything came together.

I really enjoyed talking with AgathaCindy Welles and Vasilios Tanis, who manage the hair and makeup teams respectively. During our conversation, I couldn’t help but ask how they managed to bring a new perspective to the Wicked Witch of the West’s iconic “Death’s Hand Is Mine” look. Tanis – His work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe includes: WandaVision And Spider-Man: No Way Home – confirmed that it took two people to do this makeover and revealed the personal flourishes added to update the look:

Two people did this make-up. Me and Addison Foreman did the special effects. Basically applied silicone apparatus. Even though she would be playing a version of the Wicked Witch of the West, I wanted her to have the essence of Agatha. She’s part of it for me and Kathryn because she has the utmost confidence in me and my aesthetic. We work simpatico together on WandaVision as well as Agatha, and we all agreed that (the character) should have a purple color palette, which is the color of Agatha’s purples. So I really focused on a different color palette. I didn’t want her to be all green, green lips, green eyes, green, green, green, green, green, green. I wanted her skin to be green so you could absorb the fact that she is the Wicked Witch of the West, and the costume sells that point very, very well.

I bet I’m not the only one who sees this The Wizard of Oz et al Movies about Oz over the years. And in most of these productions, the iconic witch appears in a black outfit and a completely green face. I found it incredibly clever that Vasilios Tanis and his team tried to use Agatha’s purple motifs not only to stay true to her as a character, but also as a way to give a new perspective on the evil witch. Going this route might seem obvious on paper, but it’s hard to tell when you consider that some makeup artists might be tempted to pay homage to what’s gone before, to a fault.

Most versions of the infamous witch of Oz tend to portray her as relatively grotesque. But that’s not what happens Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania This is what the artist was trying to do. As he continued to explain, he wanted to add a significant amount of pure “beauty” to this comment. He explained this to me and how it fits with what is known about Agatha Harkness’s character:

I also wanted it to have a beauty aspect and a kind of panache attached to it. Because he is such a big character and you could see how he portrayed that character in this episode. You know, it’s such a big, big character. So everything was more active, more exaggerated. His chin was more exaggerated. His nose was more exaggerated. His skin color had completely changed and become exaggerated. So I felt like it had to be an element of beauty. So I went for a more dramatic edge and added the purple color palette over the green, which I thought worked really well with the mix of pinks and a little more ghoul-like palette to reflect the madness and grandeur of Agatha in this particular episode.

Honestly, I’m tired of thinking about the painstaking work that would have to be done for this. And while that’s far from the most important aspect of all this, it’s also intriguing that the debut of this version of the iconic Oz character coincides with the release of Oz itself. Bad adaption. So it’s great that Vasilios Tanis made an effort to make Harkness’s witch different from the very first moment:

I wanted it to stand out. I wanted to stand out. I didn’t want to be a complete and utter replica of every version of the Wicked Witch of the West we see in popular culture. I wanted it to be different. I wanted to create a dramatic contrast to everything else you might see with an actor playing this type of character.
