Tom Cruise Returns for ‘Final Showdown’ in Action-Packed First Footage

The title and first trailer of Tom Cruise’s eighth “Mission: Impossible” movie have finally been announced.

Originally planned to be “Part Two” of 2023’s “Dead Reckoning,” “Mission: Impossible 8” is now officially titled “The Final Reckoning.” It is scheduled to be released on May 23, 2025. The film was originally planned for 2022 but was postponed multiple times due to the pandemic and the SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike.

Cruise posted the title and a poster Monday morning, along with the caption, “Every election led to this.”

In the action-packed trailer, Cruise scuba dives and explores a wrecked submarine, flies and crashes out of a biplane, and does a lot of running. Angela Bassett was also revealed to be returning as CIA Director Erika Sloane, following her first appearance in “Mission: Impossible – Fallout.”

In “Dead Reckoning,” Cruise’s Ethan Hunt finds himself up against a dangerous artificial intelligence program called The Entity that predicts his every move and could lead to disaster if it falls into the wrong hands. At the end of the film, Ethan, who survives a terrible train accident, realizes that the Entity is hiding in an old Russian submarine, but an enemy from Ethan’s past named Gabriel (Esai Morales) is also after him.

Morales returns for the new film, alongside Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Hayley Atwell, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, Henry Czerny, Greg Tarzan Davis, Mariela Garriga and Indira Varma. Newcomers to the series include Hannah Waddingham, Janet McTeer, Holt McCallany, Katy O’Brian, Nick Offerman and Tramell Tillman.

Christopher McQuarrie returns as director and co-writer after helming “Rogue Nation,” “Fallout” and “Dead Reckoning.” He previously collaborated with Cruise on the “Jack Reacher” series as well as “Top Gun: Maverick.” The screenplay was written by McQuarrie, Bruce Geller and Erik Jendresen. Cruise and McQuarrie serve as producers. Chris Brock, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Tommy Gormley, Don Granger and Susan Novick serve as co-producers, with Gina Hallas serving as co-producer.
