‘How many times do we have to do this?’

GOLDEN, Colo. (KUSA) — Golden Police officer He died in an accident that occurred on Wednesday. Evan Dunn (33), who was identified while on duty at night

He was with Officer Bethany Grusing, the field training officer who was injured in the crash on Route 58 around 5 p.m. Wednesday.

On Thursday, Velma Donahue-Sandberg spoke to 9NEWS about the tragedy.

“How many times do we have to do this?” Donahue-Sandberg said.

Donahue-Sandberg’s late husband, Cody Donahue, was a Colorado State Trooper. He was shot and killed while working A crash on Interstate 25 in 2016.

“People don’t understand this. “It’s the law you’re passing through,” he said.

He advocated raising the penalty to a felony for drivers who kill someone for not moving.

On Thursday, Colorado State Trooper Sherri Mendez said she thinks about Donahue every time they’re on the road.

“We think about him, everyone knows his story, and it’s always in the back of our minds as we help others,” Mendez said.

The soldier talked about the importance of the law.

“As first responders, our job is to help everyone, and while we do our job, we want to get home safe to our own families,” Mendez said.

It’s a problem he says continues to happen.

“Three Colorado State Patrol troopers have experienced military incidents since August, so that number is three (since then),” Mendez said.

Donahue-Sandberg said more needs to be done and drivers can start by reminding themselves of the law before getting behind the wheel.

“Think as if your family member was there. Think about it, your father, your grandfather, your son, your daughter, what would you do if you were driving and they were standing next to that road?” Donahue-Sandberg said.
