Calgary Swifties head to Toronto and Vancouver for Taylor Swift tour

This is the show of the year, maybe even the decade, for fans of Taylor Swift, better known as Swifties.

The music icon is bringing his world Eras tour to Canada’s biggest city this week, and while it’s nearly impossible to get tickets right now, some lucky Calgarians are making the trip from Calgary to Toronto.

“It’s definitely starting to feel real,” said 16-year-old Ella Buchanan, who traveled with her twin sister and parents to see Swift’s live concert, one of six sold-out shows in Canada’s largest city on Friday.

“It still feels like a dream,” said 16-year-old Macey Buchanan.

The Buchanans bought their tickets more than a year ago and have created a calendar to count down each day since.

They specially design every outfit, down to the details of their shoes.

Everyone will be dazzled or wearing an outfit inspired by Swift or her music, except for their dad, who will be wearing a Travis Kelce jersey.

“The whole family was consumed by the Taylor prep,” Tyneal Buchanan said.

“It was pretty special for all of us. We were always pretty tight, but we’ll remember it forever.”

They also created over 200 friendship bracelets to share with fellow fans.

It’s a trend that stemmed from a lyric in one of Swift’s songs.

“Taylor Swift is truly unique in her ability to motivate and excite her fan base,” said Dawn Johnston, professor of communications, media and film at the University of Calgary.

“Many musicians and artists have loyal and enthusiastic followers, but I think the fact that Taylor Swift has grown up in the public eye and grown old in the public eye as an adult, as a feminist, is one of the most interesting things about her.”

The Eras tour heads to Toronto for six shows from November 14-23, and then heads to Vancouver in December, the final stop for only two shows in Canada.

Heather Roy and her daughter Harper recently won a pair of tickets to the Vancouver show after entering a contest at a dentist in Calgary.

“It feels like winning the lottery,” Roy said.

“It’s like the Beatles for our parents’ generation.”

But for the duo, the show is much more than a concert.

They will honor their daughter and sister, who passed away from cancer, was a huge Swiftie, and will perform 22 of her songs during her battle with the disease.

For Heather Roy and her daughter Harper, the Taylor Swift show in Vancouver is much more than a concert.

“I think this concert will be really special. It will be a moment where he will be with us,” Roy said.

“So many special memories during difficult times are thanks to this music.”
