History of the Citroen 2CV

Most people will recognize the iconic Citroen 2CV, which was last produced in 1990, but its history goes back 42 years.

Over nine million were produced during this time, with just over 2,300 remaining in the UK with MOT.

Designed by Pierre-Jules Boulanger, the car was claimed to be built to be sturdy enough to “carry four 100kg peasants to market at 50km per hour over muddy unpaved roads”.

The 2CV made its debut at the Paris Salon de l’Automobile motor show on 7 October 1948.

More than 3.8 million 2CVs were produced during the production period until the 1990s, making it the first million-selling front-wheel drive car after another Citroen model, the Traction Avant.
