Driver charged, one injured, 5&20 temporarily closed after two-car crash in Canandaigua

Ontario County authorities report a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of State Route 5&20 and Hickox Road in Canandaigua on Monday afternoon that left one driver with internal injuries and multiple charges.

According to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, 62-year-old Jay A. Vandyke of Bloomfield was driving eastbound on State Route 5&20 when he collided with another vehicle around 1 p.m. The other driver, Mark F. Powless, 74, of Niagara Falls, was reportedly slowing at a red light when Vandyke rear-ended his vehicle. Vandyke suffered internal injuries and was transported to the hospital in stable condition. Powless escaped unharmed in the incident.

Authorities determined that Vandyke was driving with a revoked license. He was charged with second-degree aggravated unlicensed activity, as well as unreasonable and prudent speeding and following too closely. Vandyke is scheduled to appear in Canandaigua City Court to answer to the charges.

As a result of the collision, State Route 5&20 between Hopkins Road and Hickox Road was closed for approximately 1 hour, and traffic was redirected until the scene was cleared.

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, Cheshire Fire Department and Canandaigua Emergency Squad responded to the scene.
