SULLIVAN, Ind. (WISH) — A Sullivan woman died Monday in a crash on U.S. 41 in the north end of the city of Sullivan, Indiana State Police said Tuesday afternoon.

Nancy Bright, 71, died in the crash at the intersection of US 41/US 150 and North Chapter Street around 9:30 Monday morning.

Investigators believe Bright was heading south on US 41 when he turned onto North Chapter Street, but instead went into the northbound lanes of US 41 and pulled into the path of a 2021 Nissan. Michael Thomas, 56, of Farmersburg tried to avoid the collision by braking.

“The force of the crash caused one passenger vehicle to stop in the northbound lane on US 41 and the other to veer onto the east side of US 41 and off the roadway,” a news release from state police said.

Thomas was taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

Drugs and alcohol are thought to have caused the accident.

Sullivan, a Sullivan County city of 4,200, is located approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes’ drive north of Evansville.
