US says a diseased tree near playground means it must be closed temporarily

The State of Guernsey has confirmed that the playground will be closed for four days as a safety precaution while a large pine tree is felled.

The area in Saumarez Park will be closed starting November 12 as the tree reaches the age where it can drop its branches.

A US spokesman also said there were signs the tree had other structural problems or was potentially diseased, and this was confirmed by a local arborist.

Planned works will be carried out throughout the week to ensure that the playground can be reopened for the weekend, weather conditions permitting.

The US spokesperson also confirmed that only those working at St John’s Residential House will be allowed to use the car park next to the playground.

Visitors to St John’s will still be able to access the house, but anyone going there will only be able to park in the rear car park of Ruette des Saumarez.
